A worked example
A ₹30,000 flat has a 120 sq ft room for Asha and a 180 sq ft room for Meet and Riya. With 50% of rent assigned to shared spaces, room rents are ₹11,000 and ₹19,000. Add ₹3,000 of utilities split per person: the room totals become ₹12,000 and ₹21,000. Meet and Riya each contribute ₹10,500.
How rent and utility shares are calculated
Equal per person: rent is divided by the total number of occupants. By income: each room’s rent follows its combined take-home income as a proportion of total household income. In both cases, a shared room receives one combined room total.
By room size: first divide the agreed common-space portion of rent by occupant count. Divide the rest by bedroom area. Room rent = its common-space share + its bedroom-area share. Enter all areas in the same unit. The default 50% common-space portion is an editable assumption, not an assessment of the property.
Utilities are divided per person independently of the rent method. Room totals are then split equally among that room’s occupants. This is a full-month proposal; it does not prorate move-in dates or value private bathrooms, balconies or room quality. Agree on the arrangement together.
Read the practical guide →Rent split calculator: common questions
How should a couple sharing a room split rent?
Enter 2 occupants for their room. In room-size mode, the couple shares the private-bedroom portion but contributes two people’s worth of common-space rent and utilities. The result shows the room total and an equal split within it.
Can utilities be equal even when rent is unequal?
Yes. Utilities always use occupant counts, independently of whether rent is divided by room size, income or equally per person.
Does a bigger bedroom always mean more rent?
In room-size mode, a larger bedroom gets a larger share of the private-space portion. Occupancy also affects the common-space portion. The formula is a starting point for discussion, not an objective definition of fairness.
Can one roommate have zero income?
Yes, in income mode a room can have zero income as long as the household’s total income is positive. That room receives zero rent under this method, but still contributes utilities according to its occupants.
Are the free calculators private?
The calculators work in the current browser tab. Names and amounts are not uploaded or saved, and refreshing clears your entries. A copied result contains the details you choose to share. Use the Split Today app for an ongoing expense record.
How does rounding work when a bill does not split evenly?
The calculators work in whole minor units: paise for INR and cents or pence for the other supported currencies. Leftover units go to the largest fractional shares first; ties follow participant order, so shares add up exactly. For example, ₹100 split three ways becomes ₹33.34, ₹33.33, and ₹33.33.
