Start the ledger before you leave
Create one group for the trip and add everyone who will share costs. In Split Today, you can add people by name before they join. An invite lets them preview the group in the app before signing in to participate.
Record advance bookings as soon as they happen: accommodation, train tickets, or a shared airport transfer. Include the person who actually paid. A booking confirmation in the group chat is useful, but a shared ledger is much easier to reconcile at the end.
Separate group costs from personal purchases
An equal split works well when everyone shares a cost equally. A room booked for the whole group might qualify; a souvenir bought by one person does not. Agree on who shares each expense before recording it.
In our free trip calculator, each expense has its own participants. Untick anyone who skipped a taxi or activity. The selected people share each expense equally. Use the app to maintain group history and record settlements.
Work out who pays whom
Add up what the group spent, calculate each person's share, then compare that share with what they paid. Someone who paid more than their share should receive money. Someone who paid less should pay the difference.
WORKED EXAMPLE
Asha paid ₹3,000 for the stay, Meet paid ₹1,500 for meals, and Riya paid nothing upfront. Total spending is ₹4,500, so each person's equal share is ₹1,500. Riya pays Asha ₹1,500; Meet is already square.
Finish with a clear settlement record
Review the ledger together before making payments. Pay each other through your preferred payment method outside Split Today, then record the settlement in the app. The app tracks expenses and settlement records; it does not transfer money.
The free trip calculator gives you a one-off settlement plan before repayments. For an ongoing group record, install the Android app; website calculations do not transfer into it.
