A CLEAR ANSWER, STEP BY STEP
How to use this calculator
- Choose an equal split or split by item, then name the people at the table.
- Enter the bill total or add items and select who shared each one.
- Add only charges not already included, choose a fixed or percentage tip, and copy everyone’s final share.
A worked example
Three friends share a ₹900 pizza. Asha and Meet also share ₹600 pasta, while Riya orders a ₹300 dessert. Each food subtotal is ₹600. Add ₹90 in charges and a 10% pre-charge tip of ₹180: the final bill is ₹2,070 and each person contributes ₹690.
How itemized bills, tax and tips are split
Each item is split equally among its selected people. These item shares make up each person’s food subtotal. Extra tax or service-charge amounts are distributed in proportion to those subtotals, so a person who ordered more contributes more of the added charge.
A percentage tip applies to the bill subtotal before separately added charges. A fixed tip is added exactly as entered. In itemized mode the tip follows food subtotals; in equal mode the complete final bill is divided equally.
Enter prices after discounts. Leave extra charges at zero if the bill total already includes them. This tool does not read receipts, infer local tax rules, or distinguish tax rates between items. Review the final total against the receipt before paying.

Can I split a bill by what each person ordered?
Yes. Select Split by item, add each dish or drink and tick its participants. A personal item has one participant; a shared starter can have several.
Is tip calculated before or after tax?
Percentage tips use the entered subtotal before the extra tax / service charge field. If your subtotal already includes tax, the percentage includes that amount too. Use a fixed tip if you want an exact amount.
How do I avoid charging tax twice?
If you enter a total that already includes tax or service charges, leave Extra tax / service charge at zero. In itemized mode, enter only the additional charges missing from your item prices.
What if someone paid for the whole dinner?
The result shows each person’s contribution to the bill. For multiple payers or expenses across an evening, use the trip expense calculator to calculate who pays whom.
Are the free calculators private?
The calculators work in the current browser tab. Names and amounts are not uploaded or saved, and refreshing clears your entries. A copied result contains the details you choose to share. Use the Split Today app for an ongoing expense record.
How does rounding work when a bill does not split evenly?
The calculators work in whole minor units: paise for INR and cents or pence for the other supported currencies. Leftover units go to the largest fractional shares first; ties follow participant order, so shares add up exactly. For example, ₹100 split three ways becomes ₹33.34, ₹33.33, and ₹33.33.
