## How to use it

- Name the people in your group and add each expense with its payer.
- Tick only the people who shared each expense. Selected participants share that expense equally.
- Review the payment list before making repayments. Copy your result, or install Split Today to start an ongoing group record.

## Worked example

Asha pays ₹6,000 for a stay shared by three friends. Meet pays ₹1,800 for dinner for all three. Riya pays ₹600 for a taxi shared only with Meet. Total trip spending is ₹8,400. Before any repayments, Meet pays Asha ₹1,100 and Riya pays Asha ₹2,300.

## How the trip settlement calculation works

Each expense is split equally among its selected participants. Leftover minor units are assigned in participant order so shares add up to the exact amount.

For each person, balance = expenses paid − allocated expense shares. Positive balances receive money; negative balances pay. The suggested transfers clear these balances, but are not guaranteed to be the mathematically smallest set of transfers.

Use one currency across the ledger. Convert overseas receipts yourself before entering them. This tool does not fetch exchange rates, move money, or sync a live group across devices.

## Common questions

### Can I exclude someone from a taxi, meal or activity?

Yes. Untick them under Shared by for that expense. They can still share every other expense. At least one person must be selected for each cost.

### Can I keep adding expenses throughout my trip?

Use the Split Today Android app for an ongoing trip group. This website calculator works in the current tab and does not save a trip history.

### Does this calculator track repayments?

No. Use it to calculate balances before repayments. In the Split Today app, you can record settlements alongside the group’s expenses. Actual payments happen outside the app.

### Does everyone need to install an app?

No installation is needed for this one-off calculation. For an ongoing group, install Split Today, add friends by name and invite them to join later.

### Are the free calculators private?

The calculators work in the current browser tab. Names and amounts are not uploaded or saved, and refreshing clears your entries. A copied result contains the details you choose to share. Use the Split Today app for an ongoing expense record.

### How does rounding work when a bill does not split evenly?

The calculators work in whole minor units: paise for INR and cents or pence for the other supported currencies. Leftover units go to the largest fractional shares first; ties follow participant order, so shares add up exactly. For example, ₹100 split three ways becomes ₹33.34, ₹33.33, and ₹33.33.
