The rent is monthly. The groceries are daily. Keep the household costs clear without turning every conversation into a money conversation.

## Agree on the split before the bill arrives

Start with a simple agreement: which expenses are shared, who participates, and how the costs will be divided. Equal shares are easy when everyone agrees they make sense. Different room sizes or arrangements may call for a different split.

The right arrangement is the one your household agrees to. A calculator can apply those shares accurately, but it cannot decide what is fair for your particular home. Write the agreement down so everyone can refer to the same numbers.

## Choose a rent method together

The calculator offers equal rent per person, rent by bedroom area, or rent by combined income for each room. In room-size mode, agree what percentage of rent represents common spaces. That portion follows occupancy; the rest follows bedroom area.

### Example

Two solo roommates have 120 and 180 sq ft bedrooms in a ₹30,000 flat. With 50% allocated to common spaces, room rents are ₹13,500 and ₹16,500. Adding ₹3,000 in equally shared utilities gives monthly totals of ₹15,000 and ₹18,000.

## Keep rent and utilities separate when the rules differ

The rent calculator keeps rent and utilities separate. Utilities always follow occupant counts, even when rent follows bedroom area or household income. Enter two occupants for a couple sharing a room so the common-space and utility portions reflect both people.

A grocery shop might also include private items. Separate those before dividing the shared basket. This avoids silently charging a roommate for something they never agreed to share.

## Keep a running household ledger

In Split Today, create a group for your flat and log shared costs as they happen. Record who paid rather than assuming every purchase was split at checkout. That running record helps when different roommates cover rent, electricity, or groceries.

Check the group balances before settling. Pay each other separately, then record the settlement. Personal spending can stay in the app's separate personal tracker rather than appearing in your household expenses.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can rent and utility bills use different methods?

Yes. Choose the rent method your household agrees on; utilities are divided equally per person, independently of that rent method. Both appear separately in the result.

### Does the calculator decide a fair rent split?

It gives a transparent proposal based on your selected method. It does not value room quality, private bathrooms, balconies or your lease. Agree on the final arrangement together.
